One weekend. One website. Seven volunteers. Infinite caffeine.

60 cups of Batdorf & Bronson coffee, 15 Red Bulls, and ten Mountain Dews is about the amount of caffeine it took to get the DEFINITION 6 team through this past weekend’s 48-hour hackathon-style event: 48in48.

48in48 is a social entrepreneurship organization that brings local professionals together to create websites and digital materials to help local nonprofits extend their reach, impact, and donations dollars. Since its founding in 2015, 48in48 has worked to bring together marketing, advertising, and technology professionals in various cities around the world to build 48 websites for 48 non-profits in 48 hours.

Building an entire website from scratch is usually a multi-month task involving an in-depth development process, a “few” rounds of revisions and weeks of QA. So, as you can imagine, condensing that timeline into 48-hours might seem impossible, but our team was able to turn dreams into reality for our assigned non-profit: WildArk and the Gopher Tortoise Conservation Initiative.

The goal of the Gopher Tortoise Conservation Initiative (GTCI) is to preserve and manage 65 viable gopher tortoise populations in Georgia and preclude the need to list the gopher tortoise on the Endangered Species List. This would be done through a $150M land protection campaign with funding from the following sources:  The State of Georgia - $50M, federal funding - $50M and private foundations and donors - $50M.

Getting to work on a website based around saving the gopher tortoise was unquestionably the perfect way to spend the weekend! Most non-profits spend all of their time doing good, and not enough time “looking good.” Having the opportunity to work with WildArk and 48in48 was an amazing experience, and I am looking forward to being part of the event again next year.
