Nick and D6 Socially Distanced… Under the Sea!

Social distancing wasn’t about to stop SpongeBob from hanging out with the coolest creatures under the sea…safely of course...in The Stars of SpongeBob Fan Favorite Special!. The Nickelodeon Creative Marketing team dreamed up the idea to put an animated spin on a virtual table read. They asked fans to vote on their favorite SpongeBob scenes, then shot the stars of the show recreating those scenes. Nickelodeon teamed up with Definition 6 to shoot, edit and mix the ½ hour event. Shooting the show took Zoom technology to a whole new level.


The 8-hour record was pulled off by a team of 20 and spanned from sea to shining sea. The New York based crew shot the LA based cast of characters: Tom Kenny (SpongeBob), Bill Fagerbakke (Patrick), Clancy Brown (Mr. Krabs), Rodger Bumpass (Squidward), Carolyn Lawrence (Sandy Cheeks), Mr. Lawrence (Plankton), along with the show’s host YouTuber David Dobrik.  It was all recorded simultaneously in their respective homes.

To bring Nickelodeon’s vision to life, the next step was to combine the new live-action footage with the existing animated scenes. The editing process, which took over 250 hours, created a  F.U.N.—filled seamless show that hooked viewers on TV and across all digital platforms. Friday night ratings were up over 45% compared to the prior 4 Fridays. And digitally, the special was the #1 viewed episode across all platforms for 4 weeks in a row.

This was an ambitious project that I couldn’t wait to tackle, but it would only work with the right partner. Definition 6 was a clear choice because of our long-standing work relationship, and the ingenuity of Chris Reinhart. There were so many daunting challenges as we tried to navigate this new territory, but Chris and his team always found the best and most innovative solutions.
